In the second half, we present the opening segment of the insightful press conference with Supreme Master Ching Hai (vegan), graciously held at the Northgate Country Club. Journalists from various media outlets gathered to explore the meaning and significance of enlightenment. With compassion and clarity, Master shares details on the Quan Yin Method, the importance of meditation, as well as other spiritual topics.
(Master, hallo. I’m a journalist from the Southern News Group.) OK. (It’s a Chinese language daily newspaper.) Go ahead.
(I’d like to ask Master about the word “Supreme” in “Namo Supreme Master Ching Hai,” which You often ask people to recite. Could You explain for us the meaning of reciting those words?) Understand. (Please shed light on it, Master.) First, it’s not I who tell them to recite it. It’s my disciples. Both my disciples and non-disciples feel that reciting it is beneficial, and it gives them inspiration, so they share it with people, thinking that it may also be helpful when others recite it too. That’s how it is. (Yes.) They mean, “OK. It’s better for you to recite it.” It’s not me who tell them to. (OK.) That’s number one. Number two, “Supreme” means our own Self Nature. (One’s own profession?) Our Self Nature. Self Nature. (Self Nature.) Our Self. (Oh.) Our Self Nature is Supreme. (Our Self is the Supreme?) Yes. Because we come from the Supreme. Where do you think we come from? We are from God – God, The Supreme God – and Buddha, meaning the Highest Quality. That’s is. The same. (Yes.)
(I’ve read one of Your books, “The Key of Immediate Enlightenment.”) Yes. (In that book, You mentioned something about the Quan Yin Method. Does the Quan Yin Method use Your own Power or external power? Could You explain it?) Our own Power. (Our own Power.) Our Real Self awakens. (Awakens.) Not external power.
(There is a question I’d like to ask Master. Does the method You practice have anything to do with Esoteric Buddhism? No. But yes as well. (In which aspect are they related?) For example, normally… Is there no translation for them? Nobody translates for this guy? Can you translate? (Yes.) Anyone who likes to understand Chinese should come [and] sit next to him.
Originally, Esoteric Buddhism means something very confidential, very secret. Anything you know – others are not supposed to know. In that aspect, we are similar, because, for example, when I teach you something, I don’t teach verbally. (Yes.) If you truly want to know your own Greatness, your own Supreme status, I will teach you. For example, what I teach you even someone next to you has no way to know. (You mean, like verbal transmission and heart-to-heart instruction, right? One-on-one.) Heart-to-heart transmission, yes. (Heart-to-heart transmission.) That’s why it’s called Esoteric Buddhism, and Esoteric Buddhism is supposed to be like that. (I see.) Because it’s too secret that no one else can know about it. Even between a husband and wife, or parents, they can’t understand the spiritual level of their child. (So it’s like a secret transmission. Transmitted secretly.) Yes and no. Since it’s a spiritual practice, (Spiritual practice.) the Soul just teaches the souls inside; the Wisdom teaches the wisdom itself. Therefore, no words are needed. That’s the way it is. No one else can know. Thus, this thing can be called Esoteric Buddhism.
(Yes. There’s one more question I’d like to ask Master. In Your book, I read a lot about how You guide Your disciples in spiritual practice.) Is there? (There’s one about meditation.) (You meditate. You said meditation is very important, and that one must make time to meditate.) Yes. (About meditation, is it easy for ordinary people to be possessed by some kind of external demons?) That happens when there’s no good Master to protect them, sometimes people get possessed. Is that what you mean? (No, I mean with your method of spiritual practice, which includes meditation – is it easy to be possessed by external demons during meditation?) (It means the same thing, getting possessed.) Yes, that’s why I said – if you don’t have a good Master to protect you, you can be possessed by external spirits that may occupy your body. But with the Quan Yin Method, we’ve never had any case like that. There has never been a single occasion of possession. (Right. Right.) Very safe. (Very safe?) Yes. (OK.) Because the Master protects you. The Master can see very far. (Yes.) Let’s say you are in America, I still can see you. Not with the physical eyes. (I see.) I mean, I will understand what problems you may have and help. (Yes.) Before you’ve fully matured and truly realized your own Supreme Nature, Master has to take care of you. That way, you won’t have problems. But without that kind of care, you would – you definitely would have problems. (Yes.)
