Inspirational quote of the day: “GOD writes the Gospel not in the Bible alone, but also on trees, and in the flowers and clouds and stars.” – The Reverend Martin Luther German Professor of Theology, Composer, Priest, and Monk (Bible Reasons)
Previously in Parts 1 and 2 of this multipart series on the Reverend Dr. Kathy Winings’s near-death experience, three hemorrhagic strokes brought Kathy to the edge of death. During an ambulance transfer after about a month in intensive care, she says she entered a vivid farm setting and began approaching Lord Jesus Christ (vegetarian), Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) (vegetarian), and her senior pastor. Before she could reach them, GOD told her it was not her time and sent her back because she still had work to do.
Kathy’s crossing-over experience had ended, but during her recovery, she says GOD began speaking to her. Those conversations taught her that GOD’s Love— not doctrine or theology— is what saves, and they continued to shape her understanding of Love, forgiveness, and the work she had been sent back to do.
One of my experiences since my NDE, with GOD is that I gained a glimpse of the image of GOD, which I put it that way, where I saw two incredible circles of great energy and electricity working synergistically, but at the heart of it was beauty, Love, and heart—or the soul. I look at it as, like, the Soul of GOD—fueling that, animating it. And I realized, well, then that’s what needs to animate my life, not this. And I had prided myself on being a good academic, a good teacher. I knew a lot, but as I tell my piano students, “I don’t want you to play from here. I don’t want you to worry about technique at this stage. I want you to play from your heart. Find the heart. Find what touches your deepest heart and desire to love in that music, and allow that to animate your fingers to play through your hands.”
Kathy says she was spiritually introduced to Sukey and Paul Jennings, two people enslaved by James Madison, the fourth President of the United States, and First Lady Dolley Madison. Sukey served as Dolley’s personal maid, while Jennings served as James Madison’s valet at his estate in Virginia and in the White House. For Kathy, their stories revealed how unresolved hurt may be carried into the afterlife.
And I was introduced to two enslaved people— they were enslaved in the household of James and Dolley Madison— and, in particular, they had a lot of hurt. And I wouldn’t say anger, but deep hurt with Dolley because she didn’t free them on her husband’s death; she didn’t follow his directions fully, and she mistreated them, even though she [was] a beloved First Lady, and she had beautiful points, but the one young woman— her maid (Sukey)— she had five children. She never got to see her five children in life. Dolley sold them all but one, one of them died.
She (Sukey) never saw them, never knew what happened, and her heart was aching and has been aching. Then I had the chance to hear that and talk with her and talk with Dolley. And understand that was something that she (Sukey) took with her when she passed, that longing. So, it’s not that it’s something that GOD did or didn’t do, but when we harm someone’s heart, if we don’t rectify that— clarify that—[on] this side, we have to do it there in some form. So, in that way, I’m very conscious of what I do to people every day, what I say, and I’m very easy to say, “Please forgive me if that hurt your heart.”
For Kathy, learning to protect other people’s hearts became part of the work GOD had sent her back to do. My purpose is, I think, to, first of all, deepen my understanding of love and become as good a mirror image of GOD’s Heart and Love as I can—to inherit it. To inherit GOD’s Love as fully as I can while I’m here. Second is to make sure I don’t hurt other people’s hearts, but also, [on] the other side, [to] share GOD’s heart with people— either teach about it, speak about it, or write about it. When I’m with my piano students— and they’re mainly teenagers— I try to get them to live based out of their heart, let their heart deepen with GOD, and let that guide their life.
When asked what word she would use to describe death, Kathy answered without hesitation: “Life.” She went on to explain why. If we believe what we teach— that we have an eternal nature; we were created to be eternally with GOD. As a parent— I don’t want to create a child and then know that once that child is gone, I’ll never see him again or her again. GOD created us. Was it as a product? No. I believe in process. GOD created as a process, and our eternal nature that reflects GOD is what makes the afterlife so exciting. Who knows what I can learn? Who knows whom I can meet? What can I receive from GOD?
Asked how she would comfort someone grieving the loss of a loved one, Kathy said she would help them recognize that death is only a temporary farewell. I would want to guide them to looking at, “What have they learned from that person? What do they want to emulate in their life to give honor to that person?” And that is so that it’s not a sad thing in that sense of, “Oh, it’s a farewell.” No, it’s a temporary farewell. The NDE—now that I’ve been there— I can talk with someone and say, “It [the afterlife] is a beautiful place. It has deep joy in it.” Also, you can honor that person more by what you do now, until it’s your time. (Brad Peterson)
